La policía en Burundi dicen que han detenido a un hombre sospechoso de matar y violar a tres monjas italianas ancianos que fueron asesinados en dos ataques en su convento.
«El presunto asesino de las tres hermanas está en nuestras manos», dijo el coronel Helmegilde Harimenshi, y agregó que el sospechoso había «confesado», Agence France-Presse informó.
El sospechoso informa, actuó solo, dijo Harimenshi.
El detenido, que no fue identificado, fue encontrado con una clave para el convento y un teléfono móvil que pertenece a una de las monjas, AFP informó citando fuentes policiales.
«Las tres monjas italianas asesinadas tenían problemas graves de salud, pero los tres, casi tercamente, quería ser enterrado en Burundi, una marca de amor hasta el extremo», la agencia de noticias Fides aprendido de la hermana Delia Guadagnini.
Ella es la ex superior regional de los Javerianos Hermanas Misioneras de María para la República Democrática del Congo y Burundi.

Las tres monjas fueron nombrados como Olga Raschietti, 83, Lucía Pulici, 75 y Bernadetta Boggian, 79 años de edad.
Hermana Delia dijo: «Las tres monjas regresaron a la parroquia acordando asumir tareas más ligeros, porque la mala salud evitó que sus anteriores actividades.
«Totalmente al servicio de la gente, haciendo visitas a domicilio, ayuda a los pobres las hermanas fueron muy queridos por el pueblo.»
Y añadió: «No podemos entender. En Burundi nunca hubo ningún malentendido y no podemos imaginar que quisiera hacernos daño de una manera tan mal. Qué happed es una tragedia y un misterio.»
Padre Mario Pulcini, superior de los Misioneros Javerianos en Burundi, informó de la muerte de los tres y le dijo a Radio Vaticano que, dada la brutalidad del ataque, parecía como una especie de venganza o algo más personal.
Papa Francisco envió un mensaje dirigido al arzobispo Evariste Ngoyagoye de Bujumbura y para la hermana Giordana Bertacchini, Superior General de los Javerianos Hermanas Misioneras de María, unirse en oración por el sufrimiento de sus familias.
«El Santo Padre pide al Señor que acoja en su reino de paz y luz estas tres monjas fieles y devotos», dijo.
«Profundamente entristecido por la trágica muerte de las Hermanas Misioneras Javerianos asesinados en Burundi, el Santo Padre desea asegurar su sincera participación en el profundo sufrimiento de la congregación para la pérdida de tales hermanas dedicados», dijo Francis.
Esperaba, «que la sangre que han derramado puede llegar a ser la semilla de la esperanza para construir la verdadera fraternidad entre los pueblos.»
El Papa imparte «la comodidad de su bendición apostólica» a sus «familias, todo el instituto y los que lloran su pérdida.»
Vice-Presidente de Burundi Prosper Bazombanza dijo que el gobierno estaba «horrorizado por semejante barbarie.»
Police in Burundi say they have arrested a man suspected of killing and raping three elderly Italian nuns who were murdered in twin attacks on their convent.
«The suspected murderer of the three sisters is in our hands,» Colonel Helmegilde Harimenshi said, adding the suspect had «confessed,» Agence France-Pressereported.
The suspect reportedly acted alone, Harimenshi said.
The man arrested, who was not named, was found with a key to the convent and a mobile telephone belonging to one of the nuns, AFP reported citing police sources.
«All three of the murdered Italian nuns had serious health conditions , but all three, almost stubbornly, wanted to be buried in Burundi, a mark of love to the end,» Fides news agency learned from Sister Delia Guadagnini.
She is the former Regional Superior of the Xaverian Missionary Sisters of Mary for Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi.
The three nuns were named as Olga Raschietti, 83, Lucia Pulici, 75, and Bernadetta Boggian, aged 79.
Sister Delia said, «The three nuns returned to the parish agreeing to take on lighter tasks, because poor health prevented them from their former activities.
«Totally at the service of the people, making home visits, helping the poor the sisters were greatly loved by the people.»
She added, «We cannot understand. In Burundi there was never any misunderstanding and we cannot imagine who would want to hurt us in such an evil manner. What happed is a tragedy and a mystery.»
Father Mario Pulcini, superior of the Xaverian Missionaries in Burundi, reported the death of the three and toldVatican Radiothat given the brutality of the attack, it seemed like some sort of vendetta or something more personal.
Pope Francis sent a message addressed to Archbishop Evariste Ngoyagoye of Bujumbura and to Sister Giordana Bertacchini, Superior General of the Xaverian Missionary Sisters of Mary, joining in prayer for the suffering of their families.
«The Holy Father begs the Lord to welcome into his kingdom of peace and light these three faithful and devout nuns,» he said.
«Deeply saddened by the tragic death of the Xaverian Missionary Sisters killed in Burundi, the Holy Father wishes to assure his heartfelt participation in the profound suffering of the congregation for the loss of such dedicated sisters,» said Francis.
He hoped, «that the blood they have shed may become the seed of hope to build true fraternity between peoples.»
The Pope imparted «the comfort of his apostolic blessing» to their «families, the entire institute and those who mourn their loss.»
Burundi’s Vice-President Prosper Bazombanza said the government was «appalled by such barbarity.»
